Implanted Tooth Restores Man’s Eyesight

  • By MIKE BRODY

(MYFOX NATIONAL) – A blind British man is able to see again after his tooth was transplanted into his eye, according the the London Telegraph .

Martin Jones, 42, a builder, had been blind for 12 years after a tub of white hot aluminum exploded in his face while working.

The rare procedure was performed by taking one of Jones’ front teeth and implanting it in his right eye as a lens holder.

The surgery, called Osteo-Odonto-Keratoprosthesis , creates an artificial cornea using the patient’s tooth and surrounding bone as a support. It was first performed in Italy in the 1960s.

Of all the sights Jones was able to see, he was most excited about getting the first glimpse of his wife Gill, whom he married four years ago.

“I met my wife when I was blind and when I found out there was a chance I would get my sight back the first person I wanted to see was her,” he said. “The doctors took the bandages off and it was like looking through water and then I saw this figure and it was her. She’s wonderful and lovely. It was unbelievable to see her for the first time.”
